// THE FOUNDRY

A wicked awesome summer experience for college students.

The Foundry invites college student developers and designers to Microsoft New England (NERD) for a summer internship like no other. The 12 week intensive program centers on building apps for Microsoft’s newest and hottest touch-screen devices. You’ll begin with boot camp, end with achievement, and have a ton of fun along the way.

// PROGRAM PRINCIPLES

  • Learn

    Structured training sessions and individual support arm each student with the tools to successfully design and develop apps for Windows and Windows Phone.
  • Collaborate

    In addition to team collaboration, students receive guidance from product managers, engineers, coders, designers, developers (and more) employees across Microsoft.
  • Build

    Students apply Microsoft development techniques to the entire process of building apps from conception through creation.
  • Launch

    The atmosphere of a start-up with the resources of a big company enable the opportunity for teams to launch an app to The Marketplace by the program’s completion.

// FOUNDRY 2012

The pilot Foundry could not have been successful without the students. Their energy, intelligence and creativity made it a summer to remember. We couldn’t have done it without them!

Last summer all 6 teams successfully shipped an app to the Windows 8 store. These apps were 100% developed by the Foundry students at NERD. From idea conception to design, to redesign to launch, these exceptional apps are waiting for you to download today:

  • Reddimage

    Browse the social site Reddit in a visual, image-based environment. Users can easily review, comment, and vote on Reddit pictures.
    “As a designer, I got firsthand experience on how important it is for coders and designers to work together. Every decision matters and has an impact on how much the user likes, or doesn’t like our end product. The design has to work with the functionality of the app and vice versa. Small teams made it easier to achieve this.”
    — Emily
  • Trackage

    Use this app to track your FedEx, UPS, USPS, and Lasership packages all in one place. Track your packages by ship date, carrier, or delivery status.
  • Catch It

    Navigate the Boston MBTA transit system in real time. Plan your route or get instant notifications about delays and arrivals. With this app, you’ll be sure to always catch it.
  • Inkarus

    This touch-enabled physics game is fun for all ages. Help Inkarus the Penguin collect gears and feathers to help him build a flying machine.
  • Never Late

    Use this app to set reminders, alarms, and timers. You’ll be on time, all the time, and in style.
    “The best part was having ownership of the development process. My team and I made all the decisions from coding to colors and everything in between. There’s an app in the store, right now, and I helped make it possible.”
    — Cameron
  • Face Reel

    This app uses advanced facial recognition software to add pizzazz to your photos by turning them into a movie. Your face stays front and center through the different images.
    “I was hesitant to intern at a big company because I really like the start-up environment, but this program showed me that Microsoft offers the best of both worlds.  We worked on small teams and had the chance to influence what the app does and what it looks like, but with all the benefits and resources of a big company.”
